Imprints from the Paper Skeleton, a series of 12 new small-scale oil paintings on paper, represents a condensation of the content found in the new large-scale paintings. (As with the larger paintings, the titles are based on Poe texts.) Many of the images appear very similar both to each other and to the larger works; the concept and technical methods underpinning each differ greatly, however, and each constitutes a stage in my ongoing process of distilling the gesture while integrating it with a pre-conceived structure. In order to keep a clear record of that process I have deliberately restrained myself from "skipping" any of these stages, but instead have taken time to leave a visual marker -- the bones of an oil painting -- at every stop along the path. As a result the paintings stand separately, but are probably more successful as an ensemble. (Click on the links above marked The Paper Skeleton 2008 . . . )
